Working log for assignment 5, my initial thoughts.

9/9/16 – I am beginning my planning by going back to the start of this C&N course and re-reading the introduction and reviewing what I have learned in order to help me focus on what I need to achieve.

Up to now my assignments have been successful and my Tutor is very keen that I produce something that can top my achievements with this final assignment. So I want to produce something that is good and sophisticated enough to work well but at the same time try not to over complicate the work and try to keep the idea simple.  Well that’s the plan.  As I work out the project we will see if I can keep to this.

Keeping in mind my essay for my last assignment – I must be sure that every single element in my picture has a reason to be there and they must in some way contribute to the narrative.  The frame / choice of composition must suggest a greater context.  Lighting has also been mentioned and I am comfortable with using speedlights soft-boxes, flags etc.  I relish the opportunity to create a professional type set-up.  I thank my TAOP course and the section on lighting that I had spent extra time working on, I learned so much about both the basics and advanced photography skills on that course.

My plan is to produce one single photo; but it must suggest that it is part of a story.  All stories have a beginning, middle and end and my picture must suggest a previous moment that is leading to the next.  The picture must be readable and must have both a studium and punctum element on order for this image to really stand-out.  All the elements inside this picture must assist this process or they should not be there.  If I can meet these goals I am at least half-way there.

But the first half of the journey is to find the subject.  I intend to use my past brain-storming techniques and I have yet to do the last exercise of section five which is an interview and perhaps an idea may germinate from this.

Clive, my Tutor has recommended an author Kafka that I came across whilst reading Walter Benjamin and perhaps an idea may present itself from one of Kafka’s short-stories.

This last assignment is both exciting and a little scary; but life without a little fear is like a meal without a little herbs and seasoning, plain and dull.

The Fae Richards Photo Archive

The artist Zoe Leonard and film-maker Cheryl Dunye collaborated to produce a project about a fictional American-African movie star called Fae Richards of the early 20th century and create an album of photographs charting her life and history from childhood at the turn of the 20th century through her glamorous carrier as a Hollywood movie star to her involvement with the civil-rights movement of the 50’s in to her old age.

The purpose was to question the truth of achievement and how history is recorded.  To ask, who gets included in written histories and why?  Who is left out and why? Who is in control of the information?

This is a cleaver project and required actors, carefully chosen costumes props and locations as well as authentic looking photography.

Reflection of my assessment feedback

1# I HAVE RECENTLY BEEN MADE REDUNDANT

I have just received my Formative feedback from my Tutor and am pleased to learn that he liked my work.

Shaun Mullins – 512659 – Photography 1 Context & Narrative – Assignment 2

This project like all the others I have had so far have been great learning-curves both in angle and in a sense of achievement.  All good.

Fortune was smiling on me when I set-up this shot as I simply filled the waste-paper bin of paper rubbish that I had rescued from our recycling bin and the sales brochure with JUST YOU happened to find it’s way to the top of the heap or I may have most likely not noticed it!

My Tutor comments on the text captions and choice of various font size.  When I came to printing I simply went by what I thought looked right.  This worked for this occasion; but I take my Tutors point and must not make this a habit.

My Tutor commented on the image with the Mars bar, that the word BELIEVE on the Mars wrapper was a little too obvious.  On reflection, I would probably agree.  However, this was not a trick of Photoshop the Mars packaging was genuinely labelled BELIEVE on all the bars that came out of a family-pack of six Mars bars purchased from a supermarket.

My Tutors comment regarding the last two images being portrait rather than landscape is also an interesting comment to remember.  I did not realize that the change in framing format would make a difference and therefore this is something I must try to keep in mind for future projects going forward.

The last image that I produced in colour, I had intentionally wanted the colour to be a dominant green to represent growth, hope and a new start (green for go).  However, again his comments are all useful and his suggested idea for an alternative image is good and simple.

I still have a lot to learn about printing; but my first attempt was acceptable at least and again I appreciate my Tutors advice.

One area of my study that I have neglected is visiting exhibitions and taking advantage of study days.  This I will start address from next week going-forward.

Also I appear to not be fully meeting my colleges strict copyright code, again this I need to address.

I am relieved that my assignment passed and that I can concentrate on my next assignment.
