I have just watched a great classic movie that I purchased as a DVD in a charity shop, Fitz Lang ‘s Metropolis, made in 1927 it is a silent film years ahead of it’s time in terms of audience appreciation and was a box office failure when first released but like all true gems they stand the test of time. I will be learning more about semiotics in this course and there is a lot to be found in silent films. The photography is superb the special effect amazing given the period and like all science fiction surprising predictions. The film can be seen on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0NzALRJifI and I would recommend anyone interested in photography or film making to watch it. The story was inspired by the Biblical Legend of the Tower of Babel. Check out the dance scene, Art Deco in motion.
Inspired, no doubt, from Egyptian art, (Tutankhamen’s tomb was discovered in 1922) the Art Deco movement was very much influenced by Egyptian colour and design.
